What We Teach

Put simply, we teach children how to learn.

Information is doubling every ten years, and in order to successfully navigate the curriculum requirements of each key learning area, students must learn how to process, apply and report information in the most efficient and effective way.

  • Our staff teach our students how to discern the information presented to them.
  • Our staff use creative and dynamic classroom practices which engage their interest and stimulate their own creativity.
  • Our staff teach our students how to manage their time so they can balance their studies with their own co-curricular and extra-curricular interests and passions.

Value Added Education

Our students continue to respond to the excellent educational policies and classroom practices we employ, in particular the practice of 'value adding', which forecasts students' academic potential with the aim of implementing learning strategies which will enable them to exceed these predictions.  Over the past five years, the achieved UAI results of the graduating students has exceeded their predicted UAI results by no fewer than six points, often as many as twelve points.  These academic gains have been achieved without the students losing their necessary 'down time' or giving up their recreational pursuits.

The foundations of value-adding begin in their primary years, through the Ad Astra programme, which offers enrichment, extension or support in the key leaning areas of Numeracy, Literacy, Science and the Humanities.  Small classes, additional resources and using either specialist or secondary school teachers brings a new dimension to these vital areas of the curriculum, and one of the most valuable outcomes from Ad Astra is the students' development or study skills that are vital to a successful academic journey through high school.

Another focus in recent years has been the issue of boys' education, and the programmes now in place have redressed the trend of girls out-performing boys in all areas of the curriculum.  These practices begin in our Infants' classes, in preparation for the state wide Basic Skills tests in Years 3 and 5, the ELLA tests in Year 7, the School Certificate in Year 10 and, ultimately, the Higher School Certificate.

At Blue Mountains Grammar School, the foundations for teaching your child has a 'whole school' blueprint - and every teacher knows their part of the plan.
